It was late at night. All the Davises were asleep. Except Ben. He tossed and turned in his sleeping bag. He was trying to decide—once and for all—what he believed.
Bigfoot can't be real, he thought. Someone would have captured him by now.
He struggled to put Bigfoot out of his mind. But he couldn't. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Bigfoot looming over him.
I've got to stop thinking about this! he thought. If I don't, he's liable to become real. And he'll pay me a visit! I don't believe. I don't believe. I don't believe. I don't believe.
Suddenly, the midnight silence was broken. Ben heard a high screeching sound in the distance.
"It's just a bird," Ben whispered. "Nothing to be afraid of."
But he wasn't entirely convinced. He had listened to tapes of birdcalls at the ranger station. And none of them had sounded like that.
They couldn't have every bird on tape, Ben thought. He heard the screech again. This time, it sounded closer! Then—
THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD.
What's that noise? Ben thought. It sounds like heavy footsteps!
THUD. THUD. THUD. THUD.
A massive shadow appeared over the top of the tent. Right over Ben's sleeping bag!
